Featured Artists and Artworks
- Dawn McKenzie: An illustrator, watercolorist, and assembler of three-dimensional pieces she calls “Archiscapes,” Dawn McKenzie is based in Osterville, Massachusetts. Having lived in New York City, San Francisco, and St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands, her work reflects the distinct character of these places. Her three-dimensional, back-lit Archiscapes offer intimate glimpses into the recesses of these locations. Dawn developed her skills working with paper through constructing dioramas and serving as a mechanical artist in the advertising industry. Her experience as a fine artist spans over 50 years, with exhibitions at venues including Studio 34 in Long Island City, NY, the Cotuit Center for the Arts in Cotuit, MA, and the Cultural Center of Cape Cod in South Yarmouth, MA.
- Richard Pawlak: Born in Chelsea, Massachusetts, Richard attended the New England School of Art in Boston and graduated from Montserrat School of Art in 1981. He studied drawing and painting under Oliver Balf and Paul Scott, both students of Hans Hofmann, as well as under Joseph Jeswald and George Gabin. Richard has developed a mastery of many artistic mediums and approaches, resulting in a diverse body of work. His paintings have been displayed in galleries on Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Boston, and Chelsea, and are included in many private collections. Richard resides in Mashpee, MA, with his wife Jan; they have two children, Jesse and Hannah, and a granddaughter, Aliyah.
- Steven Shpall: A photographer who has been working with images since high school, Steven grew up in a home with a color darkroom and has always loved photography. With the advent of modern digital cameras and Photoshop, he began "creating" images, often starting with a photograph and then adding or moving elements to achieve the final image. His alterations of everyday objects often result in abstract or surreal scenes. Steven's work has been featured in exhibitions such as "Alternative Facts: Photography by Any Means" at the PACE Center Art Gallery in 2021 and "Black & White Portfolios" at Gallery House in Palo Alto, CA, in 2019.
Each work in this exhibition serves as a metaphor for the unseen stories and complexities beneath the surface. Whether through Dawn McKenzie’s intricate Archiscapes, Richard Pawlak’s expressive paintings, or Steven Shpall’s surreal photographic compositions, these artists challenge viewers to look closer and think deeper.
